Research Topic: Representation of Women in Hindi Songs from 1988 to 2013: Commodification and Empowerment

Abstract: Hindi film songs are key elements of Indian popular culture and often have greater longevity than films. They also serve as promotional vehicles for films.  The images, narrative content and ideologies that emerge from song and dance sequences help to better understand the development of Hindi cinema.  This study deals with representation of women in Hindi songs from 1988 to 2013 and explores the often conflicting discourse around commodification and empowerment and seeks to understand the growing agency of women in Hindi song scenes, many of which are designed to focus on the erotic display of women’s bodies.
