Saving your work

Logging in connects you to your student Home (H:) Drive where you can save your work.

This drive or a removable disk (for example: a USB Flash drive) are the only places on the computer you can save you work in Arts Labs, so if your home drive does not appear on screen you must save to a removable disk.

To save your work:

  1. Click on the File menu.
  2. Select Save As.
  3. The Save As window appears. Save in shows the current drive your file is to save to.
  4. By default, your personal drives appears to save to. Your personal Home Drive (your H: drive, named with your NetID).
  5. To change the drive to save to select a location in the Save drop-down menu. For example: To save to your Home Drive select the H: drive named with your NetID.
  6. You can change your file’s name in the File Name field.
  7. To replace a file on the drive or disk, save it with the same name.
  8. Click on Save.

To Open your files:

  1. Click on Open on the File menu or toolbar.
  2. Look in the drive or disk where it is saved.
  3. Click on the file, and click Open or double-click on the file.

Some saving points:

  • Backup your work: Save copies of your work in different places: a copy on your personal H: drive; a copy on a USB Flash drive; or attached to an email. You then have a backup should the drive or file fail.
  • You can save to USB Flash drives and CD-ROM in the Arts Labs.
  • Your Home Drive size is 100Mb. Once that limit is reached you will need to remove or delete files to save work to your drive.
  • Different Faculties' computer labs have different personal drives for you. This H: drive is only accessible in the Faculty of Arts labs and The Kate Edger Information Commons.
  • Take some time to organise the files on your drives or disks so different versions of files won't become confusing. You can create folders to help you do this.
