Postgraduate Research Student Support (PReSS) accounts

All University of Auckland doctoral students receive an annual stipend which is paid into a PReSS account. Funding is credited on an annual basis for up to four years full-time (or pro-rata for part-time). The stipend is intended to help cover direct research costs.

Graduate Teaching Assistantships

In many departments PhD students can apply for Graduate Teaching Assistantships that enable them to work as tutors while undertaking doctoral research. This is a good way to gain valuable professional teaching experience. Departmental PhD Advisers can provide more information on the tutoring role and application details.

The Faculty of Arts Doctoral Research Fund

In addition to the funds paid into your PReSS account, you may apply for funding from the Faculty of Arts Doctoral Research Fund. This provides grants to support research costs in addition to those allocated by the University. Applications are considered on a contestable basis taking into account merit and research needs. The standard maximum grant is $5,000. However, the Committee may match contributions from Departments up to a maximum of $1,500 per applicant, bringing the potential combined total maximum award to $8,000 per applicant. Candidates may receive only one award during their doctoral enrolment.

There is one application round per year. Application will be via online form. The closing date for applications is 4pm, Thursday 1 March. Recommendations will be considered by the Faculty of Arts Research Committee at their April meeting. Supervisors and students will be advised of the outcome within 20 days after the Research Committee meeting. Successful applicants must return the signed acceptance form to the Faculty Office within one calendar month of being notified of the award.
