Mathematics makes essential contributions to the biological, information and physical sciences, economics, engineering and finance. Mathematics can also be applied to communications, linguistics and genetics. Wherever problems need to be solved, mathematics has a role to play.
Mathematics and your career
Mathematics develops advanced problem-solving skills and opens up career opportunities in industry or government, computer development, insurance, meteorology, traffic engineering, systems analysis, computer programming, statistics, biometrics or operations research. There is also strong demand for mathematics teachers.
Study options in Mathematics
Mathematics is available for both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Arts. It is taught by the Department of Mathematics within the Faculty of Science.
