How to plan your first year of the BA

Try out different BA subjects and leave your options open for the future.

How many courses to take

Unless you have been admitted under the Arts Targeted Admission Scheme, you would take 8 courses (120 points) in your first year - 4 courses in Semester One and 4 courses in Semester Two. (This is a normal full-time enrolment.)

How many subjects to study

You should choose four BA subjects to study in your first year. See the list of BA subjects.

How to structure your first year's enrolment
  • Choose the three BA subjects that interest you the most. Take two courses in each of these three subjects. These subjects should be available as both BA majors.
  • Take your seventh course from another BA subject. This subject should be available as a BA major.
  • Your eighth course should be in General Education. You'll have to choose from the list of General Education courses which are available for BA students. Find out more about General Education.

This will leave your options open for your second year. You'll be able to choose two or three of these subjects to continue with at Stage II. Two of these will become your major and minor, or your two majors.

See the list of BA subjects.

Below is an example of how you might structure your first BA year.

You would normally take four courses in Semester One and four courses in Semester Two. Choose the three BA subjects that interest you the most, and take two courses in each. Take one course in a fourth BA subject and take your eighth course in General Education.
