Postgraduate study
At Bachelor of Arts (Honours) level, Museums and Cultural Heritage combines courses in museum studies with courses in other relevant disciplines: Anthropology, Art History, History, Maori Studies and Sociology.
You can therefore continue to specialise in the area of your undergraduate degree, with a focus on visual and material culture. You are encouraged to build up expertise in your chosen field. At the same time you will develop an understanding of museums and heritage practices in visual and material culture, with particular relevance to New Zealand and the Pacific. You will widen your scope and understand related areas of study within museums and cultural heritage.
For the Master of Arts you can undertake research to address problems relating to the exhibition of visual and material culture. This will combine your knowledge of a particular discipline with museum theory and practice.
The BA(Hons) is a stand alone degree a postgraduate level. It may be taken after a completed BA and is awarded as a separate qualification. The BA(Hons) may be used as the entry qualification for the one year MA.
Admission requirements
A major in one of Anthropology, Art History, History, Maori Studies, Museums and Cultural Heritage or Sociology or, in exceptional cases, such other subject as approved by the Coordinator of the
Programme in Museums and Cultural Heritage.

There are two separate MA options, depending on your entrance pathway.
120-point (one-year) MA
The 120-point MA requires one year of full-time study, with admission from a BA(Hons) or PGDipArts. The MA in Medieval and Early Modern European Studies is available as a research masters.
Admission requirements
A BA(Hons) or PGDipArts in Medieval and Early Modern European Studies with an average grade of B or higher, or equivalent.

240-point (two-year) MA
The 240-point MA requires two consecutive years of full-time study, with admission from a BA or approved equivalent qualification. The MA in Medieval and Early Modern European Studies is available as a research masters.
Admission requirements
A BA (or approved equivalent qualification) with a major in one of Art History, Christian Thought and History, English, European Studies, French, German, History, Italian, Music, Philosophy, Political Studies, Spanish. You must have an average grade of B or higher in at least 45 points above Stage II in the major.
To progress to the second year of the MA
In the first 120 points of MA enrolment, you must achieve:
- An average grade of B, or
- For a research masters, any grade specified for enrolment in a thesis or research portfolio.
If you do not achieve the required grade, enrolment for the MA cannot continue.
