Undergraduate study

What can you study?

You can study film, television and media from academic or practical perspectives, including production and script-writing. We have strong links with the local film and television industries and emphasise media production in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

You can combine any courses or focus your study through one of the following pathways.

Film studies/film theory

Key concepts, theories, histories and methodologies in film studies. You can take courses on Hollywood, Bollywood, European, Asian and New Zealand film.

Media, new media and television studies

Television, print media, music video and new interactive media. You can study the media as it relates to politics, identity, sport and other aspects of social life.

Television production and media writing

Television studio production, documentary and drama, script-writing and other kinds of media writing. (Many of these courses are limited entry.)

Aotearoa/New Zealand and the Pacific

Aspects of film, television and other media in Aotearoa/New Zealand and the Pacific, to add a local dimension to your study.

Undergraduate programmes in Film, Television and Media Studies

  • a BA major or minor subject
  • elective courses in the BA.

Enrolling in Stage I courses

You should take FTVMS 100 Media Studies and FTVMS 101 Film Studies. These core courses explore fundamental concepts in Film, Television and Media Studies, and enable you to enrol later in Stage II courses.

Production courses

Production courses (FTVMS 201, 301, 303, 311) depend on access to expensive equipment and small group teaching, and so class numbers are limited. 

Entry is competitive. If you want to enrol, you must submit an application to the department in January or June.

Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Film, Television and Media Studies

Requirements for a BA major and minor

For a single major you must pass at least 135 points, including at least 60 points above Stage II.

For a double major you must pass at least 120 points in each of two majors, including at least 45 points above Stage II in each major.

For a BA minor you must pass at least 90 points, including at least 60 points above Stage I.
