Postgraduate study
The School of Theology offers taught and research programmes in Biblical Studies.
Taught programmes
All taught programmes include two integrative courses in Theology, offering an overview of theoretical and methodological questions common to all the theological disciplines. You will also select specialist courses in Biblical Studies, and, under the guidance of expert staff, write a research essay or dissertation on a subject of particular interest. You can also take some courses in other Theological disciplines or in related topics from other departments and faculties.
Research programmes
Masters and PhD students join a community of theological scholarship with a strong focus on Contextual Theology, as well as a broad range of theological interests and expertise. Biblical Studies staff are currently researching the Gospels of Matthew, John and Mark, ecological readings of biblical texts, gender and healing in the Graeco-Roman world, and contextual readings of the Bible (especially Pacific Island epistemologies and hermeneutics). Our research students meet every month with each other and with staff for a research seminar and meal. You are encouraged to present your research at conferences in New Zealand and abroad, and to seek opportunities for publication.
A postgraduate qualification in Biblical Studies equips you with the skills specific to careers in faith communities, further theological research and education, and public policy. You will also develop transferable skills in research, communication and argument that you can use in a range of careers.
The BTheol(Hons) is a stand-alone degree at postgraduate level. It may be taken after a completed BTheol and is awarded as a separate qualification. The BTheol(Hons) may be used as the entry qualification for the one year MA.
Admission requirements
A completed BTheol (or equivalent qualification), including 45 points in Biblical Studies at Stage III with an average grade of at least B. You must also have passed at least 30 points from BSTHEO 135, 175, 235, 275.

The MTheol is a one-year degree which may be taken following a BTheol(Hons) or PGDipTheol. The MTheol is available as a Research Masters.
Admission requirements
A BTheol(Hons) with at least Second Class Honours, First Division, or an approved equivalent qualification; or a Postgraduate Diploma in Theology with at least Merit, or an approved qualification. Admission must be approved by the Head of the School of Theology.
Required course of study
The MTheol consists of a 120-point thesis.
