Current Biblical Studies students and recent graduates tell their own stories.
Biblical Studies
The scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are foundational texts for Christian Theology. Although the Christian churches differ in the relative importance they place on scripture and tradition, for all of them the Bible is central to Theology.
Biblical Studies and your career
Biblical Studies provides you with transferable skills in research, communication and argument that you can use in a range of careers in the public and private sectors. A postgraduate qualification will equip you with skills specific to careers in faith communities, further theological research and education, and public policy.
Study options in Biblical Studies
Biblical Studies seeks to study, explain and read scriptures in the light of experience today.
We begin with a general introduction to biblical texts. The Old Testament (or Hebrew Bible) describes God’s dealings with the chosen people and their responses. The New Testament contains the first Christians’ attempts to understand who Jesus was and his life, death and resurrection.
You will also study more detailed examinations of how particular texts are read in New Zealand today and explore different perspectives that inform interpretation.
Biblical Studies is available for both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Theology, and is taught by the School of Theology.
