Postgraduate study opportunities in Anthropology

The Department of Anthropology at The University of Auckland offers New Zealand's leading programme in Anthropology. You have diverse opportunities for postgraduate study in the four major sub-fields of anthropology:

  • Archaeology
  • Biological Anthropology
  • Ethnomusicology
  • Social Anthropology

You are also encouraged to work across these sub-fields to gain both qualitative and quantitative research skills.

Current research in Anthropology

The Department of Anthropology is particularly renowned for innovative research in the Pacific. As well as Australia and New Zealand, we have projects in:

  • Easter Island
  • Fiji
  • Hawai'i
  • Marquesas
  • Solomon Islands
  • Papua New Guinea.

Research topics range from prehistory to material culture, art to religion, fashion, gender, intellectual property, music, health, ecology, osteology and genetics.

Our research also extends worldwide, including work in Brazil, Europe, India, Taiwan, China and the Middle East. Topics include: political anthropology, primate and human ecology, human growth, traditional and popular music, and archaeological projects.

Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Anthropology

The BA(Hons) is a stand alone degree at postgraduate level. It may be taken after a completed BA and is awarded as a separate qualification. The BA(Hons) may be used as the entry qualification for the one year MA.

Admission requirements

A BA (or equivalent) with a major in Anthropology or Anthropological Science. You must have an average grade of B or higher in 45 points above Stage II in the major.

Master of Arts in Anthropology

From 2012 there are two separate MA options, depending on your entrance pathway.

120-point (one-year) MA

The 120-point MA requires one year of full-time study, with admission from a BA(Hons) or PGDipArts. It is available as either a research or taught masters.

Admission requirements

A BA(Hons) or PGDipArts in Anthropology with an average grade of B or higher. The research masters has higher requirements.

240-point (two-year) MA

The 240-point MA requires two consecutive years of full-time study, with admission from a BA or approved equivalent qualification. It is available as either a research or taught masters.

Admission requirements

A BA with a major in Anthropology, a BSc with a major in Anthropological Science, or an approved equivalent qualification.

To progress to the second year of the MA

In the first 120 points of MA enrolment, you must achieve:

  • An average grade of B, or
  • For a research masters, any grade specified for enrolment in a thesis or research portfolio.

If you do not achieve the required grade, enrolment for the MA cannot continue.
