Alumnus’s gaming company about to explode

22 February 2012

Arts and science graduate Chris White is on the edge of making a fortune in computer games.

He is the creator of online game BigLittleBang.com, which is growing exponentially in the United States. It already has 34,000 players since it launched in 2011, more than half of them American children. He is now seeking US investors to expand his creation in the lucrative gaming market.

BigLittleBang.com is an online 3D virtual world for children aged 7 to 14. The fun and innovative game invites kids to be creative with music, regardless of their musical background. Visitors to the site create their own unique avatar, to explore planets and make music with other kids in real time.

“It’s an approach that is so simple a five-year old with no musical background can grasp it, but versatile enough to allow any song to be integrated into the game - including a live concert where you can literally play along with the band!”

Chris’s success was in a large-part fostered by the University and the support available to budding entrepreneurs. He completed a Bachelor of Science at the University followed by a Screen Production Masters in Drama Directing in the Department of Film, Television and Media Studies. He started developing his gaming idea in the Business School’s Spark Programme (for aspiring entrepreneurs) and was a finalist in the Spark 40K Challenge in 2007. This led to a space in The Icehouse business incubator to develop his business with mentorship from the business community, and the assistance to form relationships with universities in the United States.

Chris went on to secure seed capital from Stephen Tindall's K1W1 fund, the ICE Angels and angel investor Sparkbox Ventures. Other angels provided additional funding to develop the prototype into a commercial game, which launched in July 2011.

Late last year Chris was awarded the Deloitte Rising Star Award for BigLittleBang.com which recognizes early-stage, innovative, high-potential companies.
