A Poetry Slam consists of broad range of voices, styles and approaches to writing and performance. Simply put, poetry slam is the competitive art of performance poetry. It encourages poets to focus on what they're saying and how they're saying it. And can be sharp, rhythmic, fun, upbeat (even if it's dealing with heavy material) and very accessible.
2011 saw the University hold its first ever Poetry Slam. This event was so popular that the Auckland University Poetry Society was formed and the Slam has become a regular occurrence on the University calendar.
