Scholarships and awards
Students at the School of Asian Studies are eligible for a number of different scholarships and student exchange programmes aimed at specific Asian Studies disciplines.
Student Exchange Scheme
Up to ten scholarships are offered each year for study in China under the New Zealand/China Student Exchange Scheme. This is administered by Confucius Institute in Auckland on behalf of the China Scholarship Council and Ministry of Education, New Zealand. Applications close towards the end of July each year. The New Zealand-China Educational Trust
Each year the New Zealand China Educational Trust provides a number of awards of up to NZ$500 each to students from The University of Auckland who want to undertake Chinese language study at a recognised institution in China (The People’s Republic, including the Hong Kong and Macao SARs, or Taiwan) during the NZ summer vacation. The Rewi Alley Scholarship in Modern Chinese Studies
This scholarship is administered by the University of Waikato and designed to encourage study and research on China, preferably in New Zealand. The scholarship is offered in alternate (odd) years with a value of $1000 and applications close with the Scholarships Office, University of Waikato, not later than 31 October in alternate (even) years. The Confucius Institute
The Confucius Institute in Auckland recommends students of Chinese for CI Scholarship to study in China each year. Visit CI Scholarship.
Many institutions in both the People’s Republic of China and Taiwan run both long-term and short-term programmes for privately funded students wishing to study Chinese language and culture. The Chinese teaching staff have information on a number of these programmes.
The Asia 2000 Foundation has established annual scholarship opportunities for study in Taiwan for one year with support from the Taipei government. Information may be obtained from the Scholarships Officer, New Zealand-Vice Chancellor Committee, Wellington.
Monbukagakusho Study Scholarships
The Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture (Monbukagakusho) of the Government of Japan offers scholarships to foreign students who wish to study at Japanese universities. The scholarship will cover transportation costs, university fees, accommodation, a living allowance and an arrival allowance. For further information see the Embassy of Japan’s website.
Heiwa Nakajima Foundation Scholarships
This is a one-year scholarship available to undergraduate students majoring in Japanese language. Applicants must be recommended by the School of Asian Studies. For more information contact Reiko Kondo, r.kondo@auckland.ac.nz
Japanese Government Scholarship
This one-year research scholarship is available to an undergraduate student majoring in Japanese language to study at the Faculty of Education of Hiroshima University. Applicants must be recommended by the School of Asian Studies. For more information email Reiko Kondo, r.kondo@auckland.ac.nz
Nippon Foundation Scholarships
Nippon Foundation (previously the Sasakawa Foundation of Tokyo) funds the Sasakawa Fellowship Fund for Japanese Language Education, supporting postgraduate students whose research will benefit Japanese language learning in New Zealand.
The fund also provides scholoarships for students who enrol for full-time for a first undergraduate degree in Japanese language.
Scholarships are also available for undergraduate students in Japan on a university exchange programme.
Asia NZ Study Grants to Japan
Study Grants to Japan are open to students at a New Zealand tertiary institution, who have been accepted on an exchange programme to Japan. These grants are a contribution towards study costs to Japan. See further details.
Other
The University of Auckland has exchange agreements with various Japanese universities, including fully supported programmes to study in Japan and holiday schemes, either on a one-off or regular basis. These will be advertised on the Japanese notice board. Information is available from teaching staff and the School of Asian Studies’ office.
