First time enrolment in language courses

All students intending to enrol in an Asian language course at the University of Auckland for the first time are required to complete an AR20A (Language Competency) form, available online only, and MUST waitlist themselves in SSO (Student Services Online) for the language course, once the enrolment period has commenced (early November each year).

AR20A (Language Competency) form.

Completing the AR20A Form
  • Language ability: this refers to your ability in the language for which you wish to apply.
  • Class numbers: a class number is a set of 5-digit numbers which is unique to each class and can be found in SSO when you enrol in a class (i.e. a lecture or a tutorial). Enter the class numbers of both the lecture and the tutorial or seminar (if applicable) for which you have waitlisted yourself in SSO.
  • Before submitting the Language Competency form, read the declaration at the bottom carefully, tick the checkbox and click on "Submit". If you have not waitlisted yourself in SSO at this stage please log into Student Services Online and waitlist yourself for the course, now.

To complete the enrolment process it is imperative that both the Language Competency Form (AR20A) and the Student Services Online waitlist process are completed.

Level of language course

The Asian language General Education courses CHINESE 100G, JAPANESE 130G, and KOREAN 110G are intended for students with no previous knowledge of the language. CHINESE 100, JAPANESE 130, and KOREAN 110 are open to students with little or no prior knowledge of the language.

For other Chinese and Korean courses, students, who have submitted the AR20A form and have prior knowledge of the language, will be asked to sit a placement test to determine which level of course is appropriate.

For other Japanese courses, students who do not have higher than NCEA level 1 Japanese should apply to enrol in JAPANESE 130; students who have taken NCEA level 2 Japanese or equivalent should apply for JAPANESE 131; students who have taken NCEA level 3 Japanese or equivalent should apply to enrol in JAPANESE 231. Depending on the previous education in Japanese language study, an interview or placement test may be necessary. Please note that you may not be approved for the course for which you have applied. The School will assess the information provided in AR20A to place you in a course at a suitable level.

Studying for interest

If you would like to enrol in a University course, but do not intend to do a degree, you should enrol in the course as a Certificate of Proficiency (COP). If, at any stage in the future, you decide to do a Bachelor's degree, you may convert COPs to credits toward that degree.

Changing streams

While you are still waitlisted on SSO and NOT yet enrolled, you may change your waitlisted stream yourself on SSO. The Arts Student Centre (ASC) will manually enrol you into the course and stream based on the latest information on SSO after your AR-20A application has been assessed.

If you wish to change streams AFTER being enrolled in the course, please note the following:

To change tutorial/seminar streams:

Change streams in SSO yourself using the “edit” option. For further instructions, please see student services.

To change lecture streams:

DO NOT do this on Student Services Online. Please e-mail asianwaitlist@auckland.ac.nz with the following information:

  1. Your name and student ID number
  2. the class number of the lecture for which you applied
  3. the class number of the lecture to which you wish to change

Wait lists

All first-time applicants for language courses are waitlisted on SSO. Students are then enrolled as the AR20A forms are processed. If you are still on the waitlist after several weeks, there may be a number of reasons for this.

  1. If you have not submitted an AR20A form, you will remain waitlisted. Please complete the form and submit it.
  2. If you have a timetable clash (i.e. the chosen class-time clashes with that of another class you have enrolled in), you will remain waitlisted until you resolve the clash.
  3. If you have an unpaid student debt (unpaid fees, library fine, etc.), the application cannot be processed until the debt is paid and the Arts Students' Centre is notified.
  4. If you sat NCEA or another entrance qualification in the preceding year, you will remain waitlisted until the results for these are released (usually mid-January).
  5. If you are applying for a General Education course, because 25% of the places are reserved for new entrants to the University, the enrolment process cannot be completed until after NCEA results are released.
  6. If you have submitted an AR20A form but have not enrolled for the course on Student Services Online, please enrol for the course.
Study Abroad courses

Study Abroad courses (e.g. CHINESE 277, JAPANESE 377, KOREAN 277) are semester-long or intensive short-term courses run at an overseas institution in the country where the language is a native language. Enrolment in these courses must be done in consultation with the School of Asian Studies. Please contact the relevant adviser.
