Scholarships and awards

Undergraduate students

There are many scholarships and awards available for undergraduate students, including entry-level/first-year scholarships.

Sir Robert Jones Scholarship in Philosophy
This scholarship is for an undergraduate student majoring in Philosophy. The scholarship is for a duration of up to three years for a value of $2000 per annum.

First in course awards
First in Course Awards were established in 2010 by the University of Auckland Council. The main purpose of these Awards is to recognise the student(s) who obtained the highest overall mark in a taught course.

Regulations

  • The Awards will be known as the “First in Course” Awards.
  • The Award will be recorded on the recipients’ official academic transcript.
  • The Awards will be allocated at the end of each semester to the student(s) whose academic performance identifies them as having achieved the highest final marks in a particular taught course. Recipients must have achieved a minimum final grade of A-.
  • In the event that two or more students obtain a final percentage mark that is within a margin of +/- 0.5%, this award will be shared.
  • Recipients of the Awards will be endorsed by The University of Auckland Council upon the recommendation of the relevant Dean of Faculty or their nominee.
  • The University of Auckland Council has the power to amend or vary these regulations provided that there is no departure from the main purpose of these Awards.

Note:

  • Directed reading and individual study courses, as defined by Faculties, are excluded from consideration for these awards.
  • Winners will be notified by the Scholarships Office.
Postgraduate students

Department of Philosophy PhD scholarships
The main purpose of this scholarship is to fund PhD students in Philosophy. This award is offered two times a year and lasts up to 36 months. The value is NZ$25,000.

Please note: Department of Philosophy PhD scholarships are not offered in 2011.

Department of Philosophy Masters scholarship
This scholarship is to fund Masters thesis students in Philosophy. Four scholarships are offered each year for a value of NZ$5,000.

Bill McAra Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a student undertaking a postgraduate degree in Political Studies at The University of Auckland where research is related to the study of Marxism-Leninism Scientific Socialism or in areas concerning the history, philosophy and practice of socialism. The value of this award is NZ$10,000.

Winifred Gimblett Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a postgraduate student in Education, Philosophy, Psychology, or Psychiatry to pursue investigation in the field of abnormal psychology. The value of this award is NZ$1,200.
