About the Department of Philosophy
The Department of Philosophy is the largest philosophy department in New Zealand and one of the largest in Australasia.
Philosophy examines fundamental questions concerning human nature and our place in the world. For example, how should we live? What is ultimately real? And what are the limits of knowledge?
Our programmes explore different areas and styles of philosophy, from Plato to Buddhist philosophy. We also offer specialised study opportunities in Ethics and Logic and Computation.
The Department of Philosophy has an established international reputation for research. We have experts in Asian, ancient, medieval, continental European, and political philosophy, as well as in ethics, epistemology, logic, and the philosophy of arts, language, science and religion.
