Faculty of Arts - Department of History

International ties

Our department, staff and students have developed productive relationships with historians and universities around the world. The dynamism of our international ties enhances our teaching, learning and research in a globally connected world.

Our strongest international institutional connections are with partners in Universitas 21 and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities, particularly Peking University, Fudan University in Shanghai, and the University of Washington in Seattle. We have established a teaching exchange with the Department of History at the University of Washington and are exploring a similar exchange with Fudan University.

Our curriculum for both undergraduate study and graduate study is international, as is our research. Our history courses draw substantial numbers of international students and, in turn, we encourage our New Zealand students to study abroad.

International collaboration and exchange characterises the professional lives of our staff, many of whom were born and received their academic training abroad. We regularly host international scholars in our Department, and our PhD students and MA students join our staff members in conducting research, publishing, winning scholarly prizes and grants, attending and presenting at conferences, and collaborating with scholars overseas.
