The Department of History at The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s largest history department.

Our academic staff are known nationally and internationally for their accomplishments in teaching, research and graduate supervision.

Our teaching and research covers a wide range of historical fields and time periods:
 

  • New Zealand history
  • Māori and indigenous history
  • the history of pre-modern and modern Europe
  • United States history
  • the history of Asia, Australia and the Pacific.

Department of History research

Staff research expertise includes sexual histories, the history of medicine, the medieval and early modern world, and transnational and comparative histories. International collaboration and exchange is a high priority for us.

The Department of History houses New Zealand's leading historical journal, the New Zealand Journal of History.
