The Department of German and Slavonic Studies offers opportunities for study and research in German and Russian.

Study opportunities in German and Slavonic Studies

German

We offer a full programme in German, from Bachelor of Arts to PhD. As well as German language, we focus on aspects of German culture such as film and literature. We are also interested in the German connection with New Zealand and the Pacific.

Russian

You can study Russian from beginner’s level. At more advanced levels there are opportunities to develop your language skills through study abroad in Russia and to focus on translation. PhD research in Russian is also available.

Overseas study opportunities in German and Russian

We encourage study abroad in Germany and Russia. We have links with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Goethe Institute.

Staff and research in German and Slavonic Studies

We combine innovative approaches to teaching with research interests in literature, language teaching, film, theatre and cultural studies. Our research includes areas as varied as linguistics, popular culture, new historicism, gender studies, post-colonialism and ethnicity.

Research in the Department of German and Slavonic Studies

We also host the Research Centre for Germanic Connections with New Zealand and the Pacific.
