About the Department of Film,Television and Media Studies
The Department of Film, Television and Media Studies at The University of Auckland is the leading department of its kind in New Zealand.
We believe that the mass media reflect and shape our society and deserve to be closely studied. While our scope is international, we have a strong focus on the relevance of these media to New Zealand.
We offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Film, Television and Media Studies and a postgraduate programme in Screen Production.
You can explore film, television and media from academic or practical perspectives. You can study aesthetics, content, institutional organisation, audiences, social relevance, technology and production techniques.
We are New Zealand’s leading research centre in our field. Staff research interests include film, television, popular music and digital media.
We are also a leader in creative work, including film and television production and scriptwriting. As well as having internationally recognised practitioners on our staff, we have strong links to the media industries in New Zealand, many of which are based in Auckland.
Students and alumni of our department have had their work shown at national and international film festivals. The Film Production Group brings together students who are interested in making their own films.
