Scholarships and awards

The Department of English offers a number of scholarships and awards for its undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Undergraduate scholarships and awards

First in course awards
First in Course Awards were established in 2010 by the University of Auckland Council.The main purpose of these Awards is to recognise the student(s) who obtained the highest overall mark in a taught course.

Regulations

  • The Awards will be known as the “First in Course” Awards.
  • The Award will be recorded on the recipients’ official academic transcript.
  • The Awards will be allocated at the end of each semester to the student(s) whose academic performance identifies them as having achieved the highest final marks in a particular taught course. Recipients must have achieved a minimum final grade of A-.
  • In the event that two or more students obtain a final percentage mark that is within a margin of +/- 0.5%, this award will be shared.
  • Recipients of the Awards will be endorsed by The University of Auckland Council upon the recommendation of the relevant Dean of Faculty or their nominee.
  • The University of Auckland Council has the power to amend or vary these regulations provided that there is no departure from the main purpose of these Awards.

Note:

  • Directed reading and individual study courses, as defined by Faculties, are excluded from consideration for these awards.
  • Winners will be notified by the Scholarships Office.

Senior Scholarships
The Senior Scholarship is awarded to the best student in the Department in their final year of the undergraduate degree (Stage III). The senior scholar must have attained at least an A- average in their major. This scholarship is designed to encourage top completing students to return to graduate study and is valued at NZ$250.

Arthur Sewell Prize in English
The Arthur Sewell Prize in English is awarded in alternate years (even) for the most outstanding work done during the year in the fields of Shakespeare studies or Milton studies. The Prize consists of book tokens to a value determined each year according to the income from the Prize fund.

John Tinline Prize in English
Awarded annually to the student who secures the highest aggregate marks gained in any five English courses in Stage III taken in the same year. The Prize shall be of the value of approximately NZ$400 per annum to be expended in the purchase of books of a scholarly nature, which shall be suitably inscribed.

Philip Sidney Ardern Memorial Prize
The Philip Sidney Ardern Memorial Prize is open to students doing courses at Stage III level towards a major in English. The aim of the Prize is principally to stimulate the study of Old and Middle English, but, in view of Professor Ardern’s wide range of literary interests, is not confined to these topics. The Philip Sydney Ardern Memorial Prize is valued at NZ$150.

Sebastian Black Prize in English
The Sebastian Black Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student achieving the highest aggregate of marks in two Stage 1 English courses. The Sebastian Black Prize is valued at NZ$200.

David Wright Prize in English
Student who achieved the highest mark in a research project (dissertation or thesis). Valued at NZ$250.

Medieval and Early Modern Studies Scholarship
To assist students embarking on a BA(Hons) or MA in Medieval and Early Modern Studies. Valued at NZ$600.

Anne Reid Memorial Trust Scholarship
To assist a graduate student from either the University of Canterbury or The University of Auckland to study English Literature, Music or Fine Arts overseas in an environment that encourages the completion of a course or work in progress, or the undertaking of further training in a recognised institution. Up to NZ$20,000.

Kendrick Smithyman Scholarship in Poetry
The main purpose of the scholarship is to encourage the study and/or practice of poetry. Valued at NZ$5,000.

Lissie Rathbone Scholarship - The University of Auckland
Awarded for excellence in the subjects of English and History, for study at The University of Auckland. Valued at NZ$300.

Lissie Rathbone Additional Scholarships
The Scholarship shall be awarded for excellence in the subjects of English and History. The Scholarship shall be awarded on the results of Stage I degree examinations; provided that consideration may be given to the class work of the candidate in these two subjects during the year preceding the examinations. Valued at NZ$200.

Professor Terry Sturm Scholarship in New Zealand and Australian Literature
To encourage research in New Zealand and Australian Literature at The University of Auckland. Valued at NZ$1,000.

Charlotte Emily Lubeck Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in a performing art who shows leadership potential and a flair for acting in comedy. Valued at NZ$1,000.

Other Faculty and University Scholarships for Students of English and Drama

Elizabeth Mary Phillips Scholarships
These Scholarships are to assist students of English to further studies in the subject. The advisory committee makes its recommendations based on past academic records of the candidates in English. Where two or more candidates are scholarship-worthy award is then decided on the candidate’s financial and personal circumstances.
