Postgraduate students
The Department of English offers various opportunities for postgraduate study, both full-time and part-time.
You can pursue specialised research projects in literary studies, drama, cultural and critical theory, critical and creative writing.
You can also extend methodological skills and follow up particular interests through coursework. This is achieved by students working closely with scholars at the cutting edge of literary, cultural and creative studies in a University that generously supports graduate research.
A postgraduate degree in English can take you almost anywhere. As well as giving you a high level of cultural fluency based on the study of literature from many periods and perspectives, obtaining an English degree will also reflect your proficiency in writing, analysis and critical thinking. These adaptive skills are needed in many careers, organisations and consultancies.
Our graduates have successfully advanced to positions in the arts and creative industries, such as advertising and web design, media and television, as well as teaching at all levels, the diplomatic service, librarianship, public relations, publishing and university administration.
The Graduate Adviser runs orientation and induction sessions for all incoming graduate students. We invite all graduate students to attend and participate in departmental research seminars and conferences, including the annual PhD presentation day.The Department also has an active Postgraduate Association, which runs reading and writing groups for students.
Graduate students are frequently employed as Graduate Teaching Assistants or research assistants on staff projects whenever possible. The Department also has an enviable track record in assisting successful graduates to further their studies overseas and in attracting international graduate students to The University of Auckland.
A complete list of masters and doctoral theses undertaken in English can now be accessed from the University of Auckland Theses and Dissertations database.
