About the Department of Anthropology
The Department of Anthropology at The University of Auckland offers New Zealand’s leading programme in Anthropology.
Our academic staff are leading experts in the major sub-fields of Anthropology:
- Archaeology: the development of human culture from its earliest beginnings to the present.
- Biological Anthropology: the study of our species, Homo sapiens, from a biological point of view.
- Ethnomusicology: the connections between music and human culture.
- Social Anthropology: the study of different cultures and ways of life.
You can specialise in Archaeology, Biological Anthropology, Social Anthropology or Ethnomusicology, or study across all areas. We offer a full range of undergraduate and postgraduate study opportunities, from Bachelor of Arts to PhD.

Professor Simon Holdaway is an archaeologist with projects in Northern Australia, outback New South Wales and, most recently, has been working just south of Giza in Egypt looking at Neolithic material.
