Scholarships and awards
There are numerous prizes and scholarships for students studying Latin, Greek, Classics, or Ancient History at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. These vary by level and field of study and are awarded at the end of each academic year.
First in course awards
First in Course Awards were established in 2010 by the University of Auckland Council. The main purpose of these Awards is to recognise the student(s) who obtained the highest overall mark in a taught course.
Regulations
- The Awards will be known as the “First in Course” Awards.
- The Award will be recorded on the recipients’ official academic transcript.
- The Awards will be allocated at the end of each semester to the student(s) whose academic performance identifies them as having achieved the highest final marks in a particular taught course. Recipients must have achieved a minimum final grade of A-.
- In the event that two or more students obtain a final percentage mark that is within a margin of +/- 0.5%, this award will be shared.
- Recipients of the Awards will be endorsed by The University of Auckland Council upon the recommendation of the relevant Dean of Faculty or their nominee.
- The University of Auckland Council has the power to amend or vary these regulations provided that there is no departure from the main purpose of these Awards.
Note:
- Directed reading and individual study courses, as defined by Faculties, are excluded from consideration for these awards.
- Winners will be notified by the Scholarships Office.

The Minerval Trust was established in 1995 by the generosity of private donors who wish to encourage the study of the Greek and Latin languages in New Zealand. The Trustees make awards each year to students enrolling in courses in Greek and/or Latin in that year. The Trustees consider both academic merit and any circumstances in which an award would be of special assistance to a student. Applications should be sent to Professor V.J. Gray as Chair of the Trust in Semester Two for awards in the following year. Notices inviting applications will be posted in the Department.
Senior Scholarships
These are awarded to the top students at Stage III in each of Greek, Latin, Classics and Ancient History. The student must have an A- average in three courses, or A- in two if only two were taken. It is not necessary to apply for these scholarships.
No student can win a senior scholarship or prize more than once.
