Planning your BA conjoint

Conjoint programmes are approved combinations of two degrees which you take at the same time. In the BA component you will take fewer subjects and courses and will need to be focused about what you want to study. You must maintain a grade average of at least B-.

Planning your BA conjoint

The requirements for the BA conjoint degree are different from the stand-alone BA. The requirements for the BA component are the same for every conjoint combination.

You would usually enrol in 135 points each year (the equivalent of nine 15-point courses each year). You normally take four or five BA courses each year, depending on the requirements for your other degree. You graduate when you have completed both degrees.

Conjoint degrees require careful planning. See the Arts Students' Centre each year before you enrol. In most cases, you should get advice for your other degree before planning your BA component.

How to plan your first year

Plan your first year so that you leave your options open for later years. Unless you have to give priority to compulsory courses for your other degree, you should take four or five BA courses.

  1. Choose the two BA subjects (available as majors) which interest you the most from the list of BA subjects.
  2. Choose two courses from each of these subjects.
  3. If you can take a fifth BA course, choose a course in a third BA subject.

For your second BA year you can take one or both of these BA subjects at Stage II. Taking both gives you a choice of majors, and the option of a double major.

See the list of BA subjects.

Choosing BA subjects and courses

You cannot include courses that are not BA courses in these 255 points. However, you can take 15 points from any University programme as part of your conjoint programme as a whole (unless your programme includes Engineering or Law). Before you enrol check with the Arts Students' Centre.

Your major(s)

Each BA major has a list of the courses that you can count towards a major in that subject. You may also need to take certain courses or fulfil other requirements to complete your major, depending on the subject.

In your first year you do not need to know what your major will be, but you should have decided this by the middle of your second year. After that it can be difficult to change your mind without having to take additional courses.

See the list of BA major subjects.

Single major requirements

At least 135 points (9 courses) including at least 60 points (4 courses) at Stage III.

Double major requirements

At least 120 points (8 courses) in each of two major subjects, including at least 45 points (3 courses) at Stage III in each of the majors.
