Planning your BA conjoint
Conjoint programmes are approved combinations of two degrees which you take at the same time. In the BA component you will take fewer subjects and courses and will need to be focused about what you want to study. You must maintain a grade average of at least B-.
The requirements for the BA conjoint degree are different from the stand-alone BA. The requirements for the BA component are the same for every conjoint combination.
You would usually enrol in 135 points each year (the equivalent of nine 15-point courses each year). You normally take four or five BA courses each year, depending on the requirements for your other degree. You graduate when you have completed both degrees.
Conjoint degrees require careful planning. See the Arts Students' Centre each year before you enrol. In most cases, you should get advice for your other degree before planning your BA component.
The structure of conjoint programmes has changed for 2013. You will complete under the requirements set out below if you first enrolled in your conjoint programme in 2013.
If you first enrolled in your conjoint programme before 2013, and have not completed your General Education requirements, you may choose to follow either the requirements set out below or those in place when you first enrolled.
Requirements for the BA conjoint
- 255 points ((17 15-point courses)
- BA subjects and courses only
- A major or double major
- At least 150 points (10 courses) above Stage I, including at least 75 points (5 courses) at Stage III.
Requirements for the conjoint programme as a whole
- 540 points or more, depending on the conjoint combination
- The total points must include 15 points (one course) in General Education
- The total points must include 15 points (one course) from any programme at this University, including the General Education programme (this does not apply to conjoints with Engineering or Law).
Refer to the conjoint regulations in the University of Auckland Calendar.
The structure of conjoint programmes has changed for 2013. If you first enrolled in your conjoint programme before 2013, and have not completed your General Education requirements, you may choose to complete either the new requirements, or the pre-2013 requirements set out below.
The BA conjoint must include:
- 270 points
- BA subjects and courses only
- a major or double major
- at least 150 points (10 courses) above Stage I, including at least 75 points (5 courses) at Stage III
- 15 points (1 course)from General Education.
Plan your first year so that you leave your options open for later years. Unless you have to give priority to compulsory courses for your other degree, you should take four or five BA courses.
- Choose the two BA subjects (available as majors) which interest you the most from the list of BA subjects.
- Choose two courses from each of these subjects.
- If you can take a fifth BA course, choose a course in a third BA subject.
For your second BA year you can take one or both of these BA subjects at Stage II. Taking both gives you a choice of majors, and the option of a double major.
See the list of BA subjects.
Your BA conjoint must include 255 points from BA courses. You cannot include courses that are not BA courses in these 255 points. However, you can take 15 points from any University programme as part of your conjoint programme as a whole (unless your programme includes Engineering or Law). Before you enrol check with the Arts Students' Centre.
See the list of BA subjects.
For BA courses see the individual subject pages.
If you first enrolled in your conjoint programme before 2013
If you are completing under the requirements in place when you first enrolled:
Your BA conjoint must include 255 points from BA courses. The remaining 15 points are from General Education. Except for this General Education course, you cannot include any courses that are not BA courses. You may only take a G-coded course if you are taking it for General Education.
