Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

The MTESOL is a web-based distance Masters Degree programme, designed for applicants with experience of teaching English as a second/foreign language and who have an BA honours or equivalent or a Diploma in TESOL. 

The programme is intended to give teachers a strong academic grounding in the teaching of English as a second or other language. The MTESOL consists of either taught courses or taught courses and a short dissertation.

The MTESOL can be completed in one calendar year or longer, depending on your pattern of enrolment.

Goals of the programme

The programme aims to give graduates a strong academic grounding in the teaching and learning of English as a second or foreign language.

Graduates should be able to:
 

  • prepare and critically assess teaching materials
  • plan a programme of language study
  • account for individual differences and learning difficulties in language learning
  • monitor and evaluate learners’ progress
  • advise teachers on effective procedures and interventions
  • explore and evaluate language learning and teaching in relation to social context
  • read and evaluate research, theory and descriptions of classroom practice in language teaching

Admission requirementsIn order to be admitted to the MTESOL, a student needs to have:a (i) (a) completed the requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) or equivalent in a relevant subjector(b) completed the requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts or equivalent with a major in a relevant subject and a professional qualification in teaching equivalent to one year’s advanced studyand(c) at least two years’ professional experience deemed relevant to this programme by Senate or 


Each of the courses is accessed via the Cecil Learning Management System of the University of Auckland.
