Ancient DNA & Pacific Chickens - A new Commensalism

Supervisors: Lisa Matisoo-Smith, Thegn Ladefoged

Alice Storey has a BA (Hons) and MA in Archaeology from Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada.  Her interests span a wide range of topics; such as pottery and skeletal analysis, ancient DNA, domestic animals, isotope studies, and their applications to understanding the prehistory of the Pacific.  Her current PhD project, supported by the Allan Wilson Centre for Molecular Ecology and Evolution examines the use of ancient chicken mitochondrial DNA as a proxy for understanding human migration and interaction.  By examining ancient mtDNA patterns and their relationships across space and through time she is hoping to understand settlement of the Pacific and how people moved chickens around to create stable food surpluses and how these were traded once established.  Under the supervision of Lisa Matisoo-Smith this project will tie in with other studies of Pacific commensals such as rats, dogs and pigs.
