The Centre for Medieval and Early Modern European Studies was established in 2003 with the assistance of a grant from the Vice-Chancellor’s Emerging Research Area Support Fund.
The Centre brings together members of a number of departments in the Faculty of Arts and the School of Theology, whose specialisations range from the end of the Roman Empire to the end of the seventeenth century.
The Centre encourages and supports interdisciplinary research projects. It co-ordinates an undergraduate teaching programme (a BA minor) and graduate programmes (a BA(Hons) and a one-year MA). The core course for the graduate programme is MEDEMS 700, Creating the Past. The Centre also seeks to engage the interest of community at large in the study of the Medieval and Early Modern period.
The Centre’s current research focuses on ‘New Zealand heritage’ projects: the Medieval and Early Modern manuscripts held in New Zealand; and the origins and development of Early European Studies in New Zealand universities throughout the twentieth century. Both are concerned with the transmission of the Old World to the New.
The Centre hosts an annual conference, held in early February. It organizes a seminar series for staff and students which runs throughout the teaching year (March to October).
