Mi Yung Park is a Lecturer in Korean at the University of Auckland. She received her PhD (2014) from the University of Hawaii and joined the University of Auckland in February 2014.

Research | Current

​My primary research interests include language and identity, social interaction, and multilingualism. I use qualitative research methods combined with ethnographic and discourse analytic approaches in order to shed light on the relationship between language learning and identity in the context of migration. I am currently working on two research projects funded by the University of Auckland and Academy of Korean Studies: 

  • Bilingualism and multicultural families in South Korea

This project explores whether and to what extent children of Southeast Asian marriage-migrant women in Korea learn, develop, and maintain their heritage language. In particular, it focuses on the views and behavior of these women regarding their children’s heritage language maintenance and the challenges they encounter in teaching their children their mother language in Korea’s relatively monolingual society. 

  • Language ideologies and identities: Exploring Southeast Asian migrant women's attitudes towards local and standard varieties of Korean

This study investigates how Southeast Asian marriage-migrant women in Korea position themselves relative to their local dialect and standard Korean, as they grow increasingly aware of the social meanings associated with different varieties of the Korean language. It also looks at how their ideologies and identities have influenced their language practices and participation in second language communities.
