Professor Christine Reta Arkinstall
Licenciada en Filologia Hispanica (Oviedo), NAATI 4 (Translating: Spa), PhD (Auckland)
After completing a Bachelor of Arts in Italian (University of Auckland), Christine obtained her Master's degree from the Universty of Oviedo (Spain, 1985) and her PhD from the University of Auckland (1991). Her field of research encompasses Spanish literature and culture from the 19th century to the present day. She is particularly interested in the construction of national identities and how these are informed by issues relevant to gender and literary genre. She has worked extensively on the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and the Franco dictatorship (1939-1975), as well as on 19th and 20tt century female writers.

In my latest book (University of Toronto Press, 2014) I foreground the exceptional contributions made by female freethinking writers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to the beginnings of democracy in Spain. I illuminate the role that these intellectuals played through the substantial body of material that my archival research on female freethinkers and periodicals has unearthed and undertake an analysis of the periodicals that they edited and the literary works that they published.
