Dr Lara Marie Greaves

Lara (Ngāti Kuri, Ngāpuhi) is a Research Fellow at COMPASS in the Faculty of Arts, and a Lecturer in Psychology in the School of Social Sciences and Public Policy at AUT.

Formerly, Lara was a PhD student in the School of Psychology working with the New Zealand Attitudes and Values Study (NZAVS). Lara’s PhD (He Pōkēkē Uenuku I Tu Ai: A Quantitative Exploration of Māori Identity, Political Attitudes, and Behaviour) examined the predictors of voting (both turnout and intended vote choice), being on the Māori electoral roll, support for protest and support for various political parties for Māori.

While at COMPASS, Lara has worked on the International Social Survey Programme and New Zealand Election Study.

Research | Current

My current research interests include:

- Sexual orientation, measuring sexual orientation (behaviour, attractions, identity), heteronormativity, well-being and sexual orientation, political attitudes and sexual orientation, intersectionality.

- Voting, political attitudes and behaviour, public opinion research and views on policies, referenda. I'm especially interested in Māori views on these topics, e.g., why participate in a colonial system?

- Survey methods, sampling, non-response (overall non-response, item non-response, retention), online survey methods (and privacy concerns), making survey methods more responsive to Māori needs.

- Mental health, bipolar disorder; how bipolar disorder intersects with gender, pregnancy, ethnicity, and sexuality.
