GRADUATE STUDIES IN
MUSEUMS AND CULTURAL HERITAGE
This exciting interdisciplinary programme, made possible through a partnership of the Auckland War Memorial Museum and The University of Auckland, enables you to develop an understanding of museum and heritage practices in New Zealand, the Pacific and elsewhere and to expand your knowledge about related discipline areas, including conservation.
The programme provides a pathway to critical appreciation of the roles, aspirations, methodologies and research profiles of museums and heritage institutions in New Zealand/Aotearoa and overseas. New Zealand museums and institutions of cultural heritage have pioneered indigenous governance structures and the participation of Maori and Pacific scholars in the research and interpretation of cultural places and artefacts. The focus of the programme lies in New Zealand and the Pacific area, drawing on appropriate courses in Anthropology, Art History, History, Maori Studies, and Sociology, offered by specialists in the field at both The University of Auckland and the Auckland Museum.
The programme is offered over one year of full-time study as a Postgraduate Diploma or a BA (Honours). This can be followed by a one-year research Masters degree. These options are also offered part-time.
Heritage is a growing area with interesting job opportunities. Graduates will be well placed to take up positions in local and national museums, galleries, and heritage programmes, both in New Zealand and the wider Pacific region. They might work in as curators, or in conservation, management, education, tourism in the private or the public sector.
