Plain English Guide
Our 'Plain English Guide' for strategic brokers and community groups is now available.
The Potential of Partnership, by David Craig and Megan Courtney, documents 'big picture' findings, practical issues and ways forward, drawing on Waitakere City experiences over the last 3 years. Specifically written in plain english, The Potential of Partnership covers the current and future context of collaboration, clarifies partnership concepts, reflects on partnership working and learnings in Waitakere, and examines decentralisation and joined-up governance. The final chapter offers ideas on moving forward - whats missing and whats needed, for future collaboration and wellbeing.

This document built on the findings of the Shared Learning Groups that were run in 2003 to link up national researchers, government officials and local facilitators.

Shared Learning Groups
At the end of 2003 a series of Shared Learning Groups were hosted in Waitakere and Christchurch. These discussions brought together strategic brokers in community organizations, government agencies and local authorities to exchange knowledge on working in partnership. Groups in both localities discussed a range of topics and participated in different ways. The documents, edited notes and presentations associated with these Shared Learning Groups are available below.

    Christchurch
Shared learning groups undertaken in 2003 have combined members of the research team and a range of strategic brokers, including: local representatives of Government ministries and inter-ministry initiatives, Christchurch City Council staff, and local community workers. The shared learning groups in Christchurch are constituted as action research in which all of the participants have equal voice in defining the process and outcomes of the meetings.

    Shared Learning Groups in Christchurch

Four topics have structured the fortnightly meetings:
  • 1. Is there more to partnership than rhetoric and the contract-for-service?
  • 2. What does the community need from academics and researchers?
  • 3. Can the process of the LTCCP (long term city council plan) be used to strengthen communities?
  • 4. How and when do we institutionalise good relationships? What makes a good strategic broker?

This document outlines the Christchurch discussions.

Participants in the shared learning groups have included:

  • Maria Butler (LPG)
  • Gill Coe (Canterbury District Health Board)

Other outputs are likely to extend beyond the formal research and centre on the sharing of information between the community and voluntary sector, university-based and government-based researchers.
