Undergraduate study in Screen Production

With a major in Screen Production undergraduate students have the opportunity to develop their screen storytelling craft.

To give undergraduate students the opportunity to develop their screen storytelling craft, a major in Screen Production is available.

The Screen Production major helps enrolled students to learn foundation filmmaking skills in a university environment. Students can practice the fundamentals of creating cinema narrative (screenwriting, directing drama and directing documentary) with staff who have strong links to the industry.

Enrolling in Screen Production

From 2018, students can apply to enrol in Screen Production only after completing their first year of study (Stage I). In Stage I, students should take COMMS 100 and MEDIA 101 to be eligible for the Screen Production programme in Stage II.

At the end of Stage I, students apply to be admitted to the Screen Production major, which includes taking SCREEN 200 and SCREEN 201. A total of 40 students will be admitted to the major. A committee will base selection on the grade received in MEDIA 101 and a completed application form designed to test students’ creative abilities and lateral thinking.

After completing SCREEN 200 and SCREEN 201, students will be selected into specific Stage III based upon grades received in SCREEN 200 and SCREEN 201, and a 250-word statement.

Screen Production students can complete their electives by selecting from either MEDIA or COMMS coded courses.

Application process

To apply to for the Screen Production major (entry in Stage III), you must submit an application in November, once you have completed SCREEN 200 and SCREEN 201.

Application deadlines

17 November 2017 for all current students going into Stage III

Please note: Your application is required in addition to the usual online enrolment processes. You are encouraged to complete this as early as possible. Students who submit their applications to screenenrolment_ug@auckland.ac.nz later than the due date may not be considered for selection.
