Undergraduate study in Philosophy

What can you study in Philosophy?

You can study historical and contemporary debate on philosophical problems and explore those problems yourself. We discuss both practical questions, eg, "Is euthanasia justifiable?" and theoretical questions, e.g. "Can the universe be explained in terms of a Supreme Intelligence?" The study of historical traditions in Philosophy provides the foundation for today's philosophical inquiry. You can also study different styles of Philosophy, e.g. Chinese philosophy.

Areas within Philosophy include:

  • The fundamental nature of reality (metaphysics)
  • The nature and limits of knowledge (epistemology)
  • Morality (ethics)
  • What makes a good society (social and political philosophy)
  • Beauty and art (aesthetics)
  • What makes an argument a good argument (logic)
