Undergraduate study in Media, Film and Television

What can you study?

If you select a major in Media, Film and Television, you can choose particular course combinations to focus your study through one of the following pathways.

Film studies/film theory

Key concepts, theories, histories and methodologies in film studies. You can take courses on Hollywood, Bollywood, European, Asian and New Zealand film.

Media, new media, television and communication studies

Television, print media, music video and new interactive media. You can study the media as it relates to politics, identity, sport and other aspects of social life. You can also apply for a limited-entry course in TV interview production (COMMS 203).

Television production and media writing

Television studio production, documentary and drama, script-writing and other kinds of media writing.

Aotearoa/New Zealand and the Pacific

Aspects of film, television and other media in Aotearoa/New Zealand and the Pacific, to add a local dimension to your study.

You can study Media, Film and Television as a BA major or take elective courses.

From 2018 the BA minor in Media, Film and Television will no longer be available for new admissions. If you are currently enrolled in the minor, please seek advice from the Arts Students’ Centre.
 

Enrolling in Stage I courses

You should take COMMS 100: Communication, Technology and Culture and MEDIA 101: Film Studies. These core courses explore fundamental concepts in Media, Film and Television, and enable you to enrol later in Stage II courses or to apply for acceptance into Screen Production from Stage II.

      

Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Media, Film and Television

If you are beginning a BA in 2018

You can take a major in Media, Film and Television as one of your two BA majors (a double major). You will need to pass at least 120 points (eight courses) towards each of your majors, including at least 45 points (three courses) at Stage III.

If you first enrolled in a BA prior to 2018

Requirements for a BA major or minor

For a single major you must pass at least 135 points, including at least 60 points above Stage II.

For a double major you must pass at least 120 points in each of two majors, including at least 45 points above Stage II in each major.

For a BA minor you must pass at least 90 points, including at least 60 points above Stage I. You can take a combination of MEDIA and COMMS coded courses to construct your major or minor. BA minors will be discontinued for new admissions from 2018. If you are currently enrolled in a minor, please seek advice from the Arts Students’ Centre.
