What can you study in Geography?

Geography will give you a comprehensive knowledge of both human and environmental systems. You can study topics ranging from the social structure of cities to the management of natural resources.

You will apply your learning to real world situations and consolidate theory with practical skills. Human Geography introduces you to a range of social science techniques, such as social and economic statistics and data analysis. Physical Geography introduces you to instrumentation for monitoring the environment and laboratory analysis of earth and organic materials.

From 2018 the BA minor in Geography will no longer be available for new admissions. If you are currently enrolled in the minor, please seek advice from the Arts Students’ Centre.

Geography is also available for programmes in the Faculty of Science.

Entry into Stage I Geography courses

To be able to enrol in Stage I Geography courses you will need to meet the following selection criteria.

  • Domestic school leavers require an NCEA rank score of at least 165, a CIE rank score of 170 or an IB rank score of 26.
  • Returning University of Auckland students require a GPA of at least 2.5.
  • Students transferring from other tertiary institutions require a GPE of at least 2.5, based on the most recent full-time year of tertiary study.
  • International students must meet the above criteria, depending on their entrance category.

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Geography

If you are beginning a BA in 2018

You can take a major in Geography as one of your two BA majors (a double major). You will need to pass at least 120 points (eight courses) towards each of your majors, including at least 45 points (three courses) at Stage III.

If you first enrolled in a BA prior to 2018

Requirements for a BA major and minor

For a single major you must pass at least 135 points, including at least 60 points above Stage II.

For a double major you must pass at least 120 points in each of two majors, including at least 45 points above Stage II in each major.

For a BA minor you must pass at least 90 points, including at least 60 points above Stage I. BA minors will be discontinued for new admissions from 2018. If you are currently enrolled in a minor, please seek advice from the Arts Students’ Centre.
