Research students

  • Evelyn Marsters (Cook Islands) joined the team in 2009 and Tufoua Panapa (Tuvalu) in 2010, both as PhD students conducting ethnographic research of their respective island groups. While Evelyn has been conducting interviews with Cook Islanders in New Zealand during 2011, Tufoua has spent the year doing fieldwork in Tuvalu and investigating the intersection between health and education.
  • Sagaa Malua joined the group in 2010, and has been conducting research with the Tuvaluan community in Auckland. In 2011 she submitted a dissertation on the subject of New Zealand immigration policy and its relationship to the health of Tuvaluans resident in Auckland.
  • Rochelle Newport undertook BHSc Honours research throughout 2011 on the analysis of health promotion in the Cook Islands, which included fieldwork in Rarotonga. In 2012 she enrolled in a masters programme supervised by Jennifer Hand.
  • Debi Futter-Puati (Cook Islands) and Setapu Resture (Tuvalu) joined the research team in March 2009, and have since both completed Masters of Arts degrees in History. They researched the history (1950-2008) of health and health services with a focus on TB and its interacting conditions in their respective island groups, and with Cook Islands and Tuvalu people in New Zealand.
