Staff research in Japanese

We are interested in Japanese society and culture as well as the Japanese language.

Our expertise and research cover:

  • Japanese language and linguistics
  • Teaching Japanese as a foreign language
  • Literary and cultural study of early modern Japan
  • Japanese social history, history of medicine, women’s history
  • Nationalism and popular culture
  • War memory in East Asian context
  • Japanese religion and society

Many of our academic staff are involved in collaborative projects with other researchers both in and outside the school, and are also research associates of the New Zealand Asia Institute’s Japan Studies Centre. The New Zealand Asia Institute sponsors collaborative research projects, conferences and workshops, and hosts post-doctoral researchers.
