First time enrolment in French language courses

Extra information for students of French

If you are enrolling in the beginners’ course, FRENCH 101 or FRENCH 101G

Places in FRENCH 101 and FRENCH 101G are strictly limited to students with no or very basic knowledge of the language. Before enrolling please make sure that you have:

We will assess your Language Ability Declaration and check your student record. We aim to respond within 5 working days.

If you:

  • are eligible we will email you to confirm. Enrol if you haven’t already done so.
  • may be eligible for a higher course we will email you to advise. Please read the instructions below.
  • are not eligible we will email you asking you to withdraw from the course. If you remain enrolled one week after receiving the notification, your enrolment in this course will be deleted on Student Services Online.

If you are enrolling in a course above beginners

If your first enrolment in a French language course is above the beginners’ course FRENCH 101 (or 101G) you must apply for an enrolment concession. It may take up to 15 working days for your enrolment to be finalised, so please start the process early.

You must attend all classes in week one of semester in order to sit a Diagnostic test.

The date of this test will be announced in class and on Cecil. The results of the test will highlight any areas of French language skills that you would be recommended to revise.

2. We will advise you to apply for an enrolment concession for the right course for your ability.

3. If you are an Arts student, the Arts Students’ Centre will check further details. If everything is in order they will finalise your enrolment. If you are not an Arts student your leading Faculty Students' Centre will check further details. If everything is in order they will finalise your enrolment. This may take 5-10 working days.
