“I’m from Singapore. I thought that studying in a whole different environment would be interesting, and Auckland seems to be a good place to travel to and study in at the same time.

“It is great to be part of Faculty of Arts. There are many different subjects and courses and the hardest part is deciding what subjects you should do in the short amount of time you have here; there are many different combinations of subjects to choose from, and the possibilities are endless. That being said, it is nice to know that the faculty will always be there to guide you and point you in the right direction.

“Studying Linguistics has deepened my understanding of the different aspects of human language from sounds to meaning, how it changes over time, how it varies in different societies and groups, and how people use language in context.

“I am now more aware of the similarities and differences across the languages I already know and the languages that I come across.

“Auckland has a laid-back and easy atmosphere. Everyone here is generally friendly, open-minded, and supportive of one another. There are many academic and pastoral support programmes and extra-curricular clubs here so it’s not that hard to find a balance between work and play.”

“The University of Auckland also has an excellent international reputation and its Linguistics programme is highly ranked. A degree from here is internationally recognised and opens up many different opportunities.
