Sili Mireta Pita

Sili is completing a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Pacific Studies

“I love the freedom I have as a postgraduate student in the Faculty of Arts to explore the areas of interest I have not only in New Zealand but also in the Pacific.

“For my research paper I explored incest in Samoa. During my studies I did voluntary work in Samoa with the Samoa Victim Support Group (SVSG). This non-government organisation deals with victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence, and during my time there I learned about the rates of incest and other forms of abuse in Samoa.

“Through exploring worldviews, cultures and societies in my postgraduate study I was able to highlight vital issues in Samoa. I developed ideas and approaches to help and empower the young victims of this abuse and create the change that is needed within our people.

“I love seeing the passion amongst the other postgraduate students in Pacific Studies. It is helpful to be surrounded by this atmosphere — especially when deadlines are near. There is a great culture of encouragement, critical feedback and sharing of ideas among Pacific Studies students and staff.

“Postgraduate study definitely requires a lot of hard work and dedication, but it is a rewarding experience and qualification to have.”
