“In 2013 I completed a Master of Arts in History at the University of Auckland and began work as an Historian at the Office of Treaty Settlements in Wellington. An MA was essential in getting an interview and ultimately in getting the position. In my current role, I work closely with Māori who are seeking to enter Treaty settlement negotiations. I have the opportunity to travel to many parts of New Zealand and the history research I get to undertake is fascinating.

“My studies provided me with the skills to write well and the ability to think analytically and critically. These skills are applicable to any career. The knowledge and expertise I gained while studying in the Faculty of Arts gave me confidence and options.

“My three years of postgraduate study were particularly challenging, but they were also the most rewarding. The staff were generous with their time and knowledge and I value the opportunities I had to work closely with them. I established lasting friendships with my cohorts and I consider them to be some of my closest friends.

“My advice to anyone considering studying Arts at the University of Auckland is to embrace the opportunity. My degree opened the door for me to work as an historian, but it has also prepared me for any career I might want to pursue.”
