Showcasing Sustainability photography competition

Still photographs can tell stories, transport viewers to other worlds, evoke powerful emotions and challenge opinions. This competition, run by the Sustainability office and PhotoSoc, invites you to use the power of photography to show us which of the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals resonate with you.

This competition has four prize categories.

Theme prizes

Photographs must be submitted under one of the following theme categories for judging:

  • Planet: Protect our planet’s natural resources and climate for future generations
  • People: End poverty and hunger in all forms and ensure dignity and equality
  • Prosperity: Ensure prosperous and fulfilling lives in harmony with nature
  • Peace: Foster peaceful, just and inclusive societies
  • Partnership: Implement the sustainable development goals through a solid global partnership

We will award $300 in camera store vouchers to the best photograph in each of these categories. The judging panel will have the right to assign a photograph to a different theme if they see fit.

Overall winner

Winners of the above theme categories will automatically be entered into the running for the overall prize. For this prize we will award another $700 in camera store vouchers, so the overall winner will receive $1000 of vouchers in total.

Best photo taken on a mobile phone

Entries taken on a mobile phone will be eligible for this award, which will be to the value of $300 in camera store vouchers.

People's choice award

A series of shortlisted photographs will be displayed in a travelling exhibition during Sustainability Week (October 2-6). Locations of the exhibition will include the Fale Pasifika, Grafton Campus, the Science Centre, and the Engineering Neon Foyer. Staff and students will be able to select their favourite exhibited image for a people's choice award, which will be $500 in camera store vouchers.
