Special guests for journalism course

Dr Gavin Ellis has put together an impressive list of special guests from the media for the journalism course that he is running in Summer School at Stage II and III, including Paul Hobbs (ONE News), Guyon Espiner (Radio NZ), David Gadd (Fairfax Media), Phil Twyford (Labour), Leonie Hayden (Mana), Karyn Scherer (NBR), Bruce Gray QC, Rod Emmerson (NZ Herald), Brett Phibbs (NZ Herald), and the Fairfax Focus team.

The course sits at the intersection of media/critical theory and the life of the working journalist. It will provide an understanding of the operational considerations and constraints that affect the production of news and current affairs in newspapers, on television and online.

Journalists will recount their personal experiences in fields from current affairs and investigative reporting to cartoons, and a media law expert will explain the legal minefield that journalism can become.

Students will also have the chance to participate in a press conference with a sitting MP.
