Faculty of Arts ranks in top 40 worldwide

23 September 2014

Professor Robert Greenberg, Dean of Arts, says “I am delighted and very proud to announce the Faculty’s rankings in the recently released 2014/2015 QS World University Rankings by Faculty. We have been placed at number 35 in the world for Arts and Humanities, while our Social Sciences were ranked at number 30. These rankings further reinforce our standing as New Zealand’s leading arts faculty.”

This result means that in Arts and Humanities, the University of Auckland ranked well ahead of Victoria University at 60, the University of Otago at 85, the University of Canterbury at 220, and the University of Waikato at 244. In Social Sciences, the pattern was similar: the Faculty of Arts at the University of Auckland ranked at 30, while the next New Zealand institution (Victoria University) was ranked at 67.

Published alongside the overall QS World University Rankings, the QS World University Rankings by Faculty uses four performance indicators to rank the world’s top 400 universities in five faculty areas: Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences & Management. These rankings draw on major global surveys of academics and employers, as well as research citations data. The prestigious QS World University Rankings are the most widely read university comparison of their kind.*

In the Best Student City category of these QS Rankings, the city of Auckland ranks at 18= (with Beijing). It is the only New Zealand city to feature in the 50-strong list. This puts Auckland above Copenhagen (20), New York (21=) and Vancouver (21=) as a great city in which to study.

The QS Best Student City assessment is based on such questions as: Does it have top-class universities? Is there a high proportion of students? Does it attract students from all over the world? Does it have a high quality of living? Is it targeted by employers? Can I afford it?
