Development Studies students accepted for UniVol programme

21 November 2014

Development Studies students Kahu Bennett and Sieni Petelo have been accepted for the 2015 UniVol programme. Kahu has just completed a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Development Studies and Sieni a Master of Arts (Taught) in Development Studies.

The UniVol programme is a collaboration between Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA), the University of Otago, Victoria University and the University of Auckland. It places student volunteers in existing development programmes around the world run by VSA partner organisations, providing a personal development opportunity for selected candidates and contributing to development education in New Zealand.

Kahu and Sieni will undertake 10 month field placements in East Timor and Samoa, respectively. These assignments are an opportunity for practical field experience and to test the development theories learnt through their studies. Associate Professor in Development Studies Yvonne Underhill-Sem is “delighted for Kahu and Seini” and is “confident that they will make a fine contribution to the well-respected VSA programmes”.

Development Studies at the University of Auckland signed on to the UniVol programme in 2014 and is looking forward to providing more UniVols in the coming years. University of Auckland students are eligible to apply if they are enrolled in at least one course in Development Studies, are able to demonstrate an understanding of development, are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident and are under the age of 28 at the time of applying.

Applications for the 2016 UniVol programme open in May 2015.
