Professor Andreas Neef receives his Outstanding Author Contribution Award from Vivienne Fox of the Emerald Publishing Group.

Andreas Neef, Professor of Development Studies in the Faculty’s School of Social Sciences, has received the 2014 Outstanding Author Contribution Award from Emerald Publishing Group.

The award was conferred for Professor Neef’s book chapter “The Interplay between Collective Action, Individual Strategies and State Intervention in Mitigating Flood Disasters in the Uplands of North Thailand and Northwest Vietnam”, which was published in Emerald’s “Community, Environment and Disaster Risk Management” series.

One of the major findings discussed in the chapter is that flood mitigation and adaptation policies need to consider local people’s own causal explanations of flood events and the potential trade-offs between community-level responses, government intervention and individual livelihood strategies. These results may also have important implications for disaster policies in Pacific countries, where Professor Neef continues his research on post-disaster response and recovery processes.

Professor Neef was delighted to receive this honour, saying that he did not expect this award at all, but was very pleased to have received it at a time when the university is running its “Increase your Impact” campaign.

Vivienne Fox, Vice-President and Regional Manager of Emerald Publishing Group, presented the award to Professor Neef in person at the University on 14 October.
