Mutiny and indiscipline in the Roman army of the Late Republic and Early Empire Event as iCalendar

02 October 2018

Venue: Room 220, Humanities Building (206-220)

Professor Lee L. Brice | Western Illinois University

Professor Brice’s talk will focus attention on discipline and indiscipline in the Roman military. Modern readers and students tend to think of the legions as having been among the most orderly of militaries for most of their history, but there was indiscipline in the Roman army and it was not limited to times of political upheaval. In this talk he will discuss several important incidents, their causes, and show that the Roman military was not unusual in this and it was successful in part because of responses to indiscipline.
