Women's Studies

Women's Studies is an area of academic study which focuses on women, gender and sexuality. It is interdisciplinary in that it draws upon knowledges from traditional academic areas. However, it also has generated a set of theoretical debates which now influence and shape both new knowledges and the traditional disciplines.

At The University of Auckland students can take both Women's Studies courses (with the prefix WOMEN) and approved courses on women and gender taught in other departments for credit towards a BA or a major or minor in Women's Studies. Departments which offer courses on women and gender include Sociology, History, Art History, Political Studies, English, Italian, Education and Philosophy.

We also offer an MA Research Masters and PhD in Women's Studies. Research and teaching interests of staff in Women's Studies include topics such as the representation of women in media and art, the operation of gender in everyday life, feminist theory, research methodology, sexuality, gender and colonialism in the Pacific, film noir and theorising the body.
